Background of the study

Cross-cultural mentorship programs have gained prominence as effective tools for career development in increasingly diverse societies. In Lagos State, these programs pair experienced professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds with emerging talents, fostering knowledge transfer, skill enhancement, and cultural competence (Olatunji, 2023). Such mentorship initiatives are designed to bridge cultural gaps and provide tailored guidance that reflects both global best practices and local realities. By exposing mentees to a variety of perspectives and professional practices, cross-cultural mentorship enhances adaptability and innovation, which are critical in today’s competitive job market. These programs also contribute to building inclusive work environments by promoting diversity and mutual understanding. However, challenges such as cultural miscommunication, power imbalances, and limited program resources can impede the effectiveness of these initiatives. This study assesses the role of cross-cultural mentorship programs in facilitating career development in Lagos State, examining their impact on professional growth and the overcoming of cultural barriers (Adebayo, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite the potential benefits of cross-cultural mentorship programs in Lagos State, many initiatives face significant challenges. Differences in cultural norms and communication styles may lead to misunderstandings between mentors and mentees, while limited funding and organizational support can restrict program scalability. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical research on the long-term career impacts of such mentorship. These issues hinder the realization of the full potential of cross-cultural mentorship as a catalyst for career development and professional integration (Olatunji, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

To evaluate the impact of cross-cultural mentorship programs on career development in Lagos State.

To identify challenges that hinder effective mentor-mentee relationships.

To recommend strategies for improving program outcomes and cultural integration.

Research questions

What challenges impede effective cross-cultural mentoring?

What measures can enhance the success of mentorship initiatives in diverse settings?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the role of cross-cultural mentorship in enhancing career development and fostering an inclusive professional environment. The findings will inform program design and policy-making, benefiting organizations, mentors, and emerging professionals in Lagos State (Olatunji, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
